Let's clear up a few myths about hypnotherapy.
I've been getting quite a few questions lately from women who are genuinely curious about hypnosis. What is it? How does it work? Will I remember anything? And, of course, the big one...
“Are you going to make me cluck like a chicken?” 🐔
Listen, I love a good movie as much as the next person, but Hollywood has done hypnotherapy absolutely ZERO favors.
Between the swinging pocket watches, creepy mind-control scenes, and people suddenly revealing their deepest secrets, I can understand why someone might be a little hesitant to try it.
So, hi! I'm Samantha Mandell, the certified hypnotherapist and Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) practitioner behind Sweet Soul Wellness.
And today, we're clearing up some of the most common misconceptions about what I actually do.
Because hypnosis isn't nearly as spooky as Hollywood makes it look. Promise.
Let’s start with my favorite one that I wish was a joke.
MYTH: “Are you going to snap your fingers, hypnotize me, and steal all my money?”
TRUTH: I wish I were making this one up. 😂
I was recently out to dinner when someone genuinely asked if I could hypnotize them into giving me all their money.
I'm sorry... WHAT?!
Apparently, somewhere along the way, Hollywood convinced people that I can snap my fingers, put someone into a trance, and walk away with their life savings before dessert arrives.
Let me clear that up.
Hypnosis is not mind control. I cannot magically override someone's judgment, force them to hand over their money, or make them do something just because I snap my fingers.
And I promise, if we're having dinner together, I'm much more interested in what's on the dessert menu than what's in your bank account.
Although, if you insist on picking up the check, I won't argue. 😉
ok, next….
MYTH #1: “You're going to control my mind!”
TRUTH: Nope. Not happening.
You remain aware and in control throughout your session. You can talk to me, move around, ask questions, or decide to stop at any time.
Hypnotherapy is something we do together, not something I do to you.
And for the record, I have absolutely no interest in controlling your mind. I've got enough going on in my own. 😉
MYTH #2: “I'll be asleep or completely unconscious.”
TRUTH: You're not asleep!
Hypnosis involves focused attention, often accompanied by deep relaxation.
Think about when you're driving a familiar route and suddenly realize you've been lost in thought, or when you're so absorbed in a book that you barely notice what's happening around you.
Those aren't exactly the same as therapeutic hypnosis, but they give you an idea of what focused attention can feel like.
During our session, you can still hear my voice, respond to questions, and remain aware of your surroundings.
No anesthesia. No magical coma. No waking up three hours later wondering what year it is.
MYTH #3: “You're going to make me spill all my deepest secrets.”
TRUTH: I'm a hypnotherapist, not a human lie detector.
Hypnosis is not a truth serum.
You decide what you want to share, and you're never obligated to discuss something that makes you uncomfortable.
In RTT, we may explore experiences, thoughts, and beliefs that feel relevant to what you're working on. But you always have a choice about what we discuss.
And one important thing to know: hypnosis isn't a reliable way to recover hidden memories or prove exactly what happened in the past.
My goal is to help you explore what feels meaningful to you, not play detective with your childhood.
MYTH #4: “Only weak-minded people can be hypnotized.”
TRUTH: Being hypnotized has nothing to do with being weak-minded.
In fact, hypnosis is a collaborative process that involves your attention and participation.
People vary in how they experience and respond to hypnosis. Some find it easy to become deeply absorbed, while others experience it differently.
You don't need to be gullible, easily manipulated, or the kind of person who believes everything they hear.
You just need to be willing to explore the experience.
And no, being stubborn doesn't automatically disqualify you. Thank goodness, because I'd be in trouble myself. 😂
MYTH #5: “Hypnotherapy is just someone telling me positive affirmations.”
TRUTH: There's more to it than repeating “I am amazing” until you believe it.
Although positive suggestions can be part of hypnosis, my work with RTT is more personalized than that.
We explore the beliefs, interpretations, and patterns that may be influencing how you think, feel, and respond in everyday life.
Sometimes you can logically know something is true—like knowing you're capable or deserving of respect—but still find yourself reacting as though you don't believe it.
That's the kind of disconnect we may explore together.
We then work on developing perspectives and responses that better support the changes you want to make.
And yes, I create a personalized recording for you to listen to after our session to help reinforce the work.
MYTH #6: “What if I get stuck in hypnosis?”
TRUTH: You're not getting stuck. I promise.
Hypnosis isn't another dimension you accidentally wander into.
You can open your eyes, move, speak, or bring your attention back to your surroundings whenever you choose.
There's no secret password required to return to reality.
Although, if there were, I'd probably make it something ridiculous like purple platypus pancakes.
MYTH #7: “Hypnosis goes against the Bible.”
TRUTH: This is a question I understand, and I'm glad when someone feels comfortable enough to ask it.
The Bible doesn't specifically address modern clinical hypnotherapy.
Hypnosis, as I practice it, is not witchcraft, worship, or an attempt to surrender your mind to someone else. It's a process involving focused attention, relaxation, and therapeutic suggestions.
And a little note to my Christian friends:
I understand how important it is to make decisions that align with your faith.
Some Christians feel comfortable with hypnotherapy, while others have reservations. I respect both perspectives.
I'm not here to challenge your relationship with God or tell you what you should believe. I'm here to answer your questions, explain my process, and respect your personal and spiritual boundaries.
Your faith is yours, and your comfort matters.
Here's what I really want you to know...
You don't have to be falling apart to benefit from working on yourself.
Maybe you're tired of second-guessing every decision. Maybe you've spent years putting everyone else's needs before your own. Maybe life has changed in ways you never expected, and you're trying to figure out who you are in this new chapter.
Or maybe you're simply curious about why you keep finding yourself stuck in the same patterns.
Whatever brought you here, I want you to know that curiosity is welcome.
You don't need to understand hypnosis before reaching out. That's literally part of my job.
And I LOVE what I do.
Seriously. Give me an opportunity to talk about the mind, beliefs, and why we do the things we do, and you might need to politely remind me that you have somewhere to be. 😂
If you've been wondering whether hypnotherapy could be right for you, I'd love to invite you to a free virtual coffee chat. ☕
No pressure. No obligation. No swinging pocket watches.
Just you, me, a cup of coffee, and an opportunity to ask whatever questions are on your mind.
I'm so glad you're here.
With love,
